The hardness test of hardened and tempered steel is mainly conducted using the HRC scale. If the material is thin,it is not suitable to use the HRC scale, you can use the HRA scale. If the material is thinner, you can use the surface Rockwell hardness tester HR15N,HR30N or HR45N scale.

1.Hardened and tempered steels

The hardness test of hardened and tempered steel is mainly conducted using the HRC scale. If the material is thin,it is not suitable to use the HRC scale, you can use the HRA scale. If the material is thinner, you can use the surface Rockwell hardness tester HR15N,HR30N or HR45N scale.

2.Surface hardening steel

In industrial production, sometimes require the core of the workpiece has good toughness, but also require its surface with high hardness and wear resistance, then we have to use high-frequency quenching, chemical carburizing, nitriding, nitriding, carbonitriding and other processes on the workpiece surface hardening, surface hardening layer thickness is generally in the zero-point a few millimeters to a few millimeters between. For the surface hardening layer of thicker materials, you can use the HRC scale to test its hardness, for the medium thickness of the surface hardening steel, you can use the HRD or HRA scale, for the thin surface hardening layer should use the surface Rockwell hardness HR15N,HR30N,HR45N scale. For thinner surface hardening layer, should use micro Vickers hardness tester or ultrasonic hardness tester.

3.annealed steel,normalized steel,soft steel

Many steel materials are annealed or normalized state of the factory, some cold rolled steel plate to different degrees of annealing to grade.A variety of annealed steel hardness test is usually used HRB scale, softer and thinner plates are sometimes used HRF,thin plates should be used HR15T,HR30T,HR45T scale.

4.Stainless steel

Stainless steel materials are usually supplied in annealed, quenched, tempered, solid solution and other states, the national standard specifies the corresponding hardness upper and lower limits, hardness testing is usually used HRC or HRB scale.Austenitic, ferritic stainless steel with HRB scale, martensitic, precipitation hardening stainless steel with HRC scale, stainless steel thin-walled tube, thickness of 1~2mm below the sheet material should be used N scale or T scale.

5.Forged steel

Forged steel is usually used Brinell hardness test, due to the organization of forged steel material is not uniform enough, and the indentation of Brinell hardness test is larger. Therefore, the Brinell hardness test can reflect the comprehensive results of the organization and performance of each part of the material.

6.cast iron

Cast iron materials often have uneven organization, coarse grain characteristics,so the general use of Brinell hardness test.Rockwell hardness tester can be used for some cast iron workpiece hardness test.Where in the fine grain castings on the small section does not have enough area for the Brinell hardness test, often available HRB or HRC scale test hardness, but it is best to use HRE or HRK scale, because HRE and HRK scale with 3.175mm diameter steel ball,it is better than the 1.588mm diameter steel ball can get a better average reading.

For hard malleable iron materials,HRC is usually used.If the material is not homogeneous, more than one measurement can be taken and the average value averaged.

7.Sintered Carbide(Cemented Carbide)

Hardness testing of cemented carbide materials is usually done using only the HRA scale.

8.Powder metallurgy materials

The hardness test of powder metallurgy workpieces can be carried out using HRB,HRF,HRH or HR15T,HR30T scales.Wherever possible, the HRB scale should be used,as it has been shown to have the best resolving power.Due to the porous nature of the material, the measured hardness value is referred to as the"apparent hardness".

9.Copper and copper alloys

Hardness testing of brass is generally carried out using HRB or HRF scales.

In testing the quality of brass sheet,Rockwell hardness test plays a very important role. The American standard ASTM B36 states that"Rockwell hardness test is the fastest and most convenient way to check whether various kinds of tempered brass meet the requirements of tensile strength or grain size".

Usually tempered brass using HRB scale, annealed brass or copper using HRF scale, thin plate or thin-walled pipe using HR15T,HR30T,HR45T scale.

Copper material standards in various countries are given in different alloy materials, different annealing or tempering conditions of HRB,HRF or HR15T,HR30T,HR45T scale of the upper and lower limits of the hardness value.

10.Aluminum and Aluminum Alloys

Hard aluminum alloys use HRB,medium hard aluminum alloys use HRE,HRF,soft aluminum alloys or pure aluminum use HRH.

Thin aluminum plate or thin-walled aluminum tube using HR15T,HR30T,HR45T.

11.Zinc

The hardness test of zinc plate usually adopts HRE and HRH,thick plate above 3.2mm uses HRE,medium plate from 1.2mm to 3.2mm uses HRH,and thin plate adopts HR15T,HR30T,HR45T.

12.Titanium

The hardness of titanium alloy is very high, usually use HRA,because there is an affinity between diamond and titanium metal,it will shorten the life of diamond. Therefore, after the test requires the use of fine sandpaper will be attached to the indenter of titanium metal removed,to maintain the cleanliness of the diamond indenter can extend the Rockwell hardness tester indenter life.
