Introduction to Metallographic Sample Preparation

The metallographic sample preparation process is mainly divided into four steps: cutting and sampling, embedding samples, grinding and polishing, and etching inspection.

1. Cutting and Sampling

The most suitable method for cutting samples is wet cutting with a cutting wheel, which can save time while ensuring that the sample structure remains unchanged. Different cutting discs should be selected based on the material of the sample to ensure minimal surface deformation and good flatness.

2. Embedding Samples

Samples that are difficult to handle need to be embedded in resin for easier preparation and inspection.

3. Grinding and Polishing

The purpose of grinding is to obtain a surface with minimal damage. The purpose of polishing is to remove the damage from grinding and achieve a flat surface suitable for inspection. The direction of the sample should be changed with each process.

4. Etching Samples

After polishing, the inspection area becomes shiny. Before observing the structure, the inspection area of the sample needs to be etched. After etching, rinse with alcohol and then dry with a blower.
